Grassroots EmpowerMent (GEM) is a university-based volunteer organisation, dedicated to addressing social issues through community service projects that are a joint initiative between youth and the community. GEM was founded with the objectives of:

• Encouraging youth to take a socially active role in the community;
• Equipping youth with the necessary skills, network and resources to successfully set-up and run sustainable community service projects; and
• Establishing accredited university courses that integrates mainstream studies with involvement in GEM projects.

We believe that community service is the most effective way to develop youth leadership.
The needs of the community and what must change in society is best taught through direct exposure and practical experience and it is for this reason that we hold community service to be an invaluable and necessary learning experience for young people. We strongly believe that giving the youths of today the skills to better serve their communities is the best way to make a positive footprint on the world and its future.
